BENEATH
THE WAVES
Our journey beneath the waves began by taking a closer look at the waves themselves. Although wind blows waves across entire oceans, the water itself moves very little. To see how, we used a giant Slinky and a marshmallow wave machine to explore wave mechanics in greater detail. Then, using water and oil, we bottled up some rolling waves to serve as a constant reminder of their hypnotic beauty.
ACROSS
THE GALAXY
Gravity brings form and order to the universe. It brings gas and dust together to create stars and planets and then sets them in motion in orbits. We begin our journey across the galaxy by getting to grips with the mechanics of these orbits using magnets, marbles and a giant trampoline. Using these, we will create scaled-down working solar systems and use this to visualise the complexity of a universe in constant motion.
PERIODIC
PIONEERS
It may look daunting to the untrained eye, but at its essence, the periodic table is a list of all the possible atoms that can exist - the elements of our universe. After using the fizziest of chemical reactions to build up our chemical vocabularies with words like atoms and molecules, protons and electrons, we explored the most basic of these elements - hydrogen and helium - and witnessed how the addition of just a single proton is the difference between a squeaky voice and a fiery explosion.
